When planning a paddling trip on Lithuania’s rivers or lakes, the question often comes up: which craft should you choose? A SUP board and an inflatable kayak offer different freedom of movement, physical effort and sense of security. In this guide we compare both options so you can decide more easily which one suits your planned route.
Key differences in movement and control
The biggest difference between the two is your body position while paddling. On a SUP board you usually stand or kneel, while in a kayak you sit on a dedicated seat. Standing on a board gives you a wider view of the water and surroundings, but it requires constant balance. In a kayak you sit lower, so your centre of gravity is close to the water surface, which gives a greater sense of stability.
Keeping your balance on a SUP board takes a little practice, especially at the start or when there are waves. An inflatable kayak, on the other hand, is extremely stable: even a complete beginner can sit in it comfortably without any prior preparation.
Speed, fatigue and physical effort
On longer routes a kayak is usually faster and takes less effort to keep moving in a straight line. Your back rests against the seat, and the double-bladed paddle lets you make symmetrical strokes on both sides without constantly changing your hand position.
Paddleboarding is the more active sport. It works the whole body: your legs keep you balanced, while your back, shoulders and core do the paddling. If your goal is an active workout in nature, the SUP board is the better choice. If you want to cover a long route calmly with less fatigue, the kayak is more practical.
Wind, waves and carrying gear
On a windy day, paddling while standing on a SUP board is hard, because your body acts like a sail. A headwind slows you down considerably and takes a lot of strength. A person sitting in a kayak creates less wind resistance, and the low centre of gravity lets you feel safe even in bigger waves.
Storage options for your gear also differ:
- SUP board: usually has bungee cords at the front or back where you can secure one or two dry bags. Your things are more likely to get wet.
- Kayak: an inflatable kayak has more room inside, where you can safely stow a few backpacks, food supplies or spare clothes, protected from direct contact with water.
Children, family and group trips
If you are paddling with your family, the choice between the two depends on the children’s age and your experience. A larger SUP board can carry an adult and a child together, but this requires the adult to have good balance. An inflatable two- or three-person kayak is the safer and calmer option in this case, because the children can sit securely inside between the adults.
For groups, combining both works very well. You can spend part of the time in kayaks, and let those who want more active fun or a swim try the SUP boards.
Transport and set-up
Both inflatable SUP boards and inflatable kayaks are very practical to transport. Deflated, they fit easily into the boot of a standard car. A pump is included, so you can set up the equipment right on the shore.
Comparison table
| Criterion | SUP board | Kayak |
|---|---|---|
| Body position | Standing, kneeling or sitting | Sitting on a seat |
| Balance | Takes learning and constant balancing | Very stable, no special skills needed |
| Physical effort | The whole body works (legs, core, back) | Mostly the upper body works |
| Wind resistance | Sensitive to strong wind | Less wind resistance |
| Room for gear | Limited space under the bungee cords | More room inside the hull |

FAQ
Which is more stable – a SUP board or a kayak?

Does an inflatable kayak fit in the boot of an ordinary car?
Yes, once deflated and packed into its carry bag, an inflatable kayak fits easily into the boot of a standard car together with the paddles and pump.
Which is better on a windy day – a SUP board or a kayak?
On a windy day the kayak is the better choice. Sitting in it, your body creates less wind resistance than standing on a SUP board.
