Paddleboarding with Children: Safety, Age and Tips

Paddleboarding with a child is a great way to spend time in nature, but it requires proper preparation and a safe route. The most important rule is to make sure the child always wears a correctly sized life jacket and that an adult is constantly nearby and watching the surroundings. With the right gear and a calm body of water, the first encounter with water activities will be safe and smooth.

Safety rules when paddling with a child

Before getting on the board with your little passenger, assess the weather conditions and choose a suitable spot. Only calm, shallow water without strong currents or big waves is suitable for paddling with children. It is best to choose warm summer days when the water has warmed up too and the wind is minimal.

  • Life jacket: The child must wear a properly fitting life jacket for the whole trip. Even if the child can swim, the life jacket is a must.
  • Leash: The adult should have the leash attached to their leg and the board. This ensures that the board does not drift away if you fall into the water.
  • The child sits at the front: When paddling together on one board, the child should sit at the front of the SUP board. This way the adult can see them at all times and stay in control of the situation.
  • Sun protection and water: Sunlight is more intense on the water, so use sunscreen, put a hat on the child and bring drinking water.
  • Short sessions: The first sessions should last no longer than 20–30 minutes so that the child does not get tired or lose focus.

When a child can paddle on their own

There is no single strict age limit for giving a child their own SUP board. The most important thing is that the child can already swim, is not afraid of the water and feels confident in it. A beginner board is perfect to start with – the child can paddle next to the parents in shallow water under supervision.

If the child is still too small to paddle on their own or gets tired quickly, it is best to paddle together on a bigger board or choose an inflatable kayak where they can sit comfortably.

Choosing the right gear for a family

When paddling with the family, a standard one-person SUP board may not be enough. Superinis.lt offers several models suited to paddling with children or a larger group.

For bigger families, the three-person Aztron Galaxie or the two-person Aztron Nebula are a good fit, as they provide more stability on the water. If you want to show children the underwater world, the Starboard Vision SUP board with a window lets you watch the bottom right through the board. For those who prefer to paddle sitting down, the inflatable two- or three-person Aquatone BLAST kayaks are a good choice.

Situation What to choose Price per day
Two people with one child Two-person Aztron Nebula 45 €

What to do after falling into the water

Before setting off, briefly explain to the child what to do after a fall. The most important thing is not to panic. The life jacket will keep the child on the surface of the water. The adult should immediately help the child climb back onto the board. We recommend lifting the child onto the board first and only then climbing on yourself.

Before every rental we give a briefing, explain the safety rules and help you choose the right accessories. The rental set always includes the board, paddle, leash, fin and, if needed, a pump, and a life jacket for a child or an adult can be rented additionally for 5 €.
