Vilnius and its surroundings have plenty of lakes and rivers that are perfect for paddleboarding. You will find a suitable route whether you want a relaxed paddle on a lake or something more active on a river. In this guide we look at the most popular spots, what makes each one special and the safety rules to keep in mind.
The most popular SUP spots in Vilnius and around
The Neris River in the city of Vilnius
The Neris is a river with a constant current, so this route is better suited to experienced paddlers or those who can already keep their balance. The most popular stretch runs past Valakampiai, Vingis Park and the White Bridge (Baltasis tiltas). Because the river has a current, it is always recommended to plan your paddle downstream.
What to look out for: Pleasure boats and other craft also use the river, so stay closer to the bank and keep alert. You also need to watch the riverbed and look out for rocks, shallows, bridge piers and other obstacles in the water.
Green Lakes (Žalieji ežerai)
The Green Lakes are one of the most popular places to paddle a SUP board in Vilnius. The water here is calm, which makes the spot ideal for beginners and families. You can also rent a SUP board on site at this lake. At the Green Lakes you can rent an eight-person SUP board for 40 € per hour, which is great for larger groups.
What to look out for: On warm summer days there are many swimmers and sunbathers around the bathing areas, so paddle carefully and keep a safe distance from people in the water.
Lake Balžis (Balžio ežeras)
Lake Balžis is right in Vilnius. It is a good spot for beginners who want to calmly learn to stand on the board and handle the paddle.
What to look out for: Watch out for swimmers in the bathing areas and keep away from the shoreline where people are relaxing.
Gulbinai lakes (Gulbinų ežerai)
The Gulbinai lakes suit both beginners and intermediate paddlers. They are a quieter alternative to the Green Lakes, where you can enjoy the peace of nature.
What to look out for: In the open parts of the lake a headwind can pick up and make paddling back harder, so check the wind direction before you set off.
Trakai (Lake Galvė)
Lake Galvė in Trakai offers a unique route around Trakai Island Castle. This spot suits paddlers of all levels, but the lake is large and busy. Read more on the SUP rental in Trakai (in Lithuanian) page.
What to look out for: Other boats also use the lake, and in open areas the wind can raise waves, so beginners are better off choosing a calm day.

How to transport a SUP board safely
Transporting an inflatable SUP board is very simple. A packed board easily fits in the boot of a standard car together with all the accessories. If you decide to rent a hard board, you will need roof rack bars to transport it. You can rent them from us for a one-off fee of 5 €.
Safety on the water
When paddling on a river, safety comes first. Always wear a life jacket, which you can rent as an extra for 5 €. You must also use the leash that connects your ankle to the board: if you fall in, the current will not carry the board away from you. Before paddling on the Neris, always assess your strength honestly and paddle downstream only.
