Where to paddle a SUP board in Druskininkai
Lake Druskonis
A small lake in the town centre: about 420 m long and up to 310 m wide. Naturally it was shallow, about 1.5 m, but it was deepened to 4 m when the town was landscaped. Pedal boats and rowing boats are used on it, so keep your distance from them. It suits a short paddle and a first attempt at standing on a board.
The Vijūnėlė pond
This is a separate body of water, not part of Druskonis: an artificial pond in the south-western part of the town, dug around 1983 in a former bog. Its area is about 11 ha, somewhat more than Druskonis. There is a beach by the pond and Vijūnėlė Park on the other side, so it is convenient to inflate your board and rest on the shore.
The Nemunas
The Nemunas wraps around Druskininkai – within the town limits it flows for about 3.5 km. It is a flowing river, and south of the town the border between Lithuania and Belarus runs along the Nemunas, where border rules apply. We do not advise beginners to paddle here; if you still choose the river, paddle only downstream, away from the town, and ask the State Border Guard Service beforehand.
Which body of water to choose
For a first time and with children, choose the Vijūnėlė pond or Druskonis – they have no current, and the shore is always nearby. The Nemunas suits only those with experience of paddling on a river.
If you are paddling with children, read the guide paddling a SUP board with children.
